Civil Engineering Facilities

LABORATORIES

The department is fully equipped with state of the art equipments. Various laboratories available are as follows.

  1. Civil Engineering Workshop

Civil Engineering Workshop is intended for giving the 1st year students of various branches, a practical knowledge of various materials used in construction of civil engineering structures (mainly buildings). eg. brick, laterite, cement, concrete, stone, wood etc., They are also given practical classes for measuring sizes of components of buildings (doors, windows etc.), floor areas, quantity calculation etc., making of brick masonry walls using different bonds, setting out of buildings, modelling of building etc. Thus all the topics covered in theory papers of Introduction to Civil Engineering and Basics of Civil Engineering are made more clear through workshop. Necessary facilities are arranged for this in the lab.

  1. Survey Lab

Surveying is the technique and science of finding out the relative position of points by linear and angular measurements. The objective of this laboratory is to facilitate learning of instruments and methods of measurement of distances, angles, reduced levels and setting out works. The experiments include determination of distances using chain and tape, reduced levels and contours using level, bearing of lines using compass, horizontal and vertical angles using Theodolite and graphical method using plane table. Use of modern equipment like total station is studied. This laboratory course will help the students to understand and use the theoretical concepts learned in the course on surveying through field activities.

  1. Strength of Materials Laboratory

The objective of strength of materials laboratory is to study the properties of various  materials when subjected to different types of loadings. This laboratory course will help the students to understand the theoretical concepts learned in the courses on Mechanics of Solids and Strength of Materials. Various properties of different materials are tested in the Strength of Materials Laboratory using apparatus / instruments such as Universal Testing Machine, Torsion Testing Machine, Spring Testing Machine, Impact Testing Machine, Hardness Tester etc.

  1. Material Testing Laboratory

The objective of material testing laboratory is to determine the physical properties of building construction materials like cement, fine and coarse aggregate and strength characteristics of cement mortar, plain cement concrete and reinforced cement concrete. The tests include determination of specific gravity, fineness, consistency, setting times, workability and soundness of cement, fineness modulus of fine and coarse aggregate, strength of cement mortar, cement concrete and bricks, tensile test on steel rods, bending and flexural strength on concrete, bending test on wood, and non destructive test on concrete. The students will be able to infer the suitability of these materials for construction. They can design the mix, make the specimens and test the same for the strength for comparison with design strength. This laboratory course will help the students to understand the theoretical concepts learned in the course building materials and concrete technology. This laboratory is used by graduate and postgraduate and for research also. Consultancy services are also offered through this lab.

  1. Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory

The objective of geotechnical engineering laboratory is to determine the physical and engineering properties of soil which are required for          suitable design of foundations for any structure. The laboratory aims to acquaint the students with the concept of “soil” as an engineering material, the properties and methods used to characterize soil for geotechnical analysis and design. Physical properties include specific gravity, moisture content, density and consistency limits of soil. The engineering properties include permeability, consolidation, compressibility, shear strength and bearing capacity of soil. Facilities for field tests are also available. Our Geotechnical engineering laboratory is equipped with modern facilities to support students in the area of Geotechnical Engineering.

  1. Transportation Engineering Laboratory

The objective of transportation engineering laboratory is to determine the properties of coarse aggregates and bitumen. Experiments include tests for impact, abrasion, attrition test and crushing strength for coarse aggregate and tests for penetration, ductility, viscosity, softening point and flash and fire point for bitumen. The students will be able to infer the suitability of these materials for construction of road. This laboratory course will help the students to understand the theoretical concepts learned in the course transportation engineering.

  1. Environmental Engineering Laboratory

The objective of this laboratory is to determine the qualities of water and waste water. The experiments include the determination of pH, turbidity, conductivity, and impurities in water and BOD, DO and COD of waste water. This laboratory course will help the students to understand the theoretical concepts learned in the course of environmental engineering. Tests are also carried out for assessing qualities of water for public and local bodies, poor sectors of society etc.

  1. CAD Lab

The objective of this lab is to familiarize the students on the various software packages for analysis, design, project management, drawing and drafting. Various softwares like AutoCAD, MS Project, Primavera, STAAD Pro. etc are available in the lab. This lab will provide familiarity softwares and with functional requirements and regulations related to buildings and enable students to design and prepare neat building drawings so as to minimize effort and maximize output.

  1. Structural Engineering Design Studio

The objective of this lab is to familiarize the P. G students on the various software packages for analysis and design of various structures and its components. Various softwares like STAAD Pro., STRAP etc are available in the lab.

  1. Computer Application Lab

The objective of this lab is to familiarize the P. G students on the various software packages for analysis and design of various structures and its components. Various finite element programs like NISA, ANSYS, SAP etc are available in the lab.
